I have the Jeppesen chip updating via the web for my 430. I just updated and
installed the new data which is Dec 25 to Jan 22. Then I got to wondering if
that chip is legal to use before the start date. Anybody know?

Why not ask Jeppesen ?

Actually it's GARMIN that would provide the official answer.

Hi,

I don't believe it is, just as it is not correct to use approach charts
before their start date. There was an article in IFR or IFR Refresher a
while back about this. Note that the charts contain both start and end
dates/times. I'm assuming you're referring to using it to fly instrument
approaches.

You're right. The guy I talked to at Jeppesen didn't know but emailed me back
that you can't use the chip for approaches before the start date. Seems they
really do change things on that date. I guess with two chips, I can update one
early and keep in the plane and change on time and then bring the old one home
for reprograming next month A little extra care but makes it legal and most
important, the insurance company can't use it against you.

I vaguely recall someone posting to the newsgroup that inquired about a
problem or error that was discovered because of using a datacard early. I do
the same with my GNS430 and since reading that post, I've been very diligent
about installing it after the start date.

Now, if I can only do the same for the Jepp Chart updates...

Two memory chips is a good idea anyway. I had a chip on my Garmin 300XL go
bad. It programmed successfully but the unit wouldn't read it. Fortunately
I had 2 and simply used the old one for the VFR flight (yep, out of date).
Now I always have a backup, backdated or pre-dated chip with me at all
times.
